Renewal and Correction of Old Torah Scrolls
The institute has a special department for renewal and correction of used Torah scrolls. Any Jew - and certainly any synagogue or community - interested in correcting and renewing a Torah can turn to us. A special institute consultant will go directly to the customer's site, carefully examine the scroll, recommend proper ways of treatment, and offer a fair price quotation.
This expert will go anywhere, even to the remotest places, in order to check a Torah scroll. In most cases, the scrolls have deteriorated from years of standing unused in a holy ark. Particularly in Europe and the CIS, many such scrolls have been hidden away to keep them from harm, and have certainly not been read or properly maintained. Therefore, these time- and weather-worn scrolls are virtually unusable and in dire need of repair.
It should be mentioned that most Torah scrolls can be restored and, after undergoing the required process, will look like new. Of course, there are times when the institute experts, along with the rabbis we regularly consult, lead us to decide that the investment is not worthwhile. They conclude that the condition of the scroll is such that it will not endure - even after correction and renewal.
Quality Restoration Adds Years of Satisfying Use
Our past experience has taught us that a scroll that has been fully restored can return to its rightful place in the ark and be read every Shabbat. The Torah is now in excellent condition, comparable to a much newer one. It has years of added life after the parchment has undergone restoration, having been coated with special chemicals. This may even apply to Torahs whose owners have abandoned hope of their reuse and have planned for their burial. In such cases where a considerable investment has been made, the scroll provides its owner special satisfaction at seeing its return to regular use. The benefits that accrue in his merit are immeasurable. It will also represent an honor to the memory of the dear departed.
